Once you’re gone, you can’t help.

That is the simple idea behind First Light.

My grandparents were good people. But after they were gone, my parents were left to work through an estate that was harder to settle than it needed to be.

What stayed with me was the time.

Hours spent finding answers. Decisions made without the people who could best explain what they wanted. A piece of my parents’ own limited time spent untangling unfinished planning.

None of that was unusual.

That is the problem.

Estate planning, probate, family relationships, property, and state law are complicated. Most people are never shown where the problems might be until their family is already dealing with them.

First Light exists to move that moment earlier.

Protect the life you are already building

The people we built First Light for are rarely irresponsible.

They contribute to the 401(k). Open the Roth. Buy life insurance. Save for a home. Think about college. Invest for retirement.

Then estate planning sits untouched.

That makes sense. Retirement gives you something to look forward to. Estate planning asks you to imagine something you would rather not.

But the purpose is much the same.

You spend decades building a life. An estate plan helps protect the people who depend on you, the things you worked for, and the decisions you would want made when you are no longer there to explain them.

We believe that belongs much earlier in ordinary financial planning—especially for young families, new parents, first-time homeowners, and anyone whose responsibilities have grown faster than their paperwork.

Start with the problem, not the document

Most estate-planning products begin by asking which document you want to buy.

We think that is backwards.

First Light starts by helping you understand what may actually happen without a plan: who may receive your property, where guardianship questions can arise, when probate matters, and when your circumstances are complicated enough that software should stop and an attorney should take over.

Sometimes the answer is a will.

Sometimes it is more than a will.

Sometimes you may not need a will at all.

That is why our assessment comes before checkout.

We would rather help you understand your situation than sell you a document you do not need.

More than a form with your name in the blanks

There is no shortage of inexpensive legal forms online.

First Light was not built to make another one.

Behind the experience is a structured body of state-specific rules, decision logic designed to apply those rules to real circumstances, document logic, and a verification process built to catch differences generic templates often miss.

The goal is simple:

Do more of the complicated work behind the scenes so planning feels simpler in front of you.

Where attorneys belong

First Light is not a law firm. That is deliberate.

We also do not believe technology makes attorneys obsolete.

Some situations need experienced legal judgment. Our system is designed to identify those situations rather than push everyone through the same document generator.

But good legal help should not require paying an attorney to spend the first hour reconstructing facts you could have organized beforehand.

We believe there is a better division of labor.

Straightforward planning should be easier to handle with good tools. When an attorney is needed, you should arrive informed, organized, and with a cleaner starting point.

That is better for the client—and we believe it is better for the attorney.

We are building relationships with attorneys who share that philosophy: practitioners who want to spend less time collecting basic information and more time doing the work that actually requires their judgment.

Trust the work, not the biography

First Light is built by a small team of business professionals who arrived here through different versions of the same experience: estates, contracts, governance, or important decisions becoming unnecessarily difficult because something had not been handled earlier.

We show the official sources behind our published state-law rules. We record when rules were verified. We track corrections. We version changes to our legal data. And when we are not confident in an answer, we would rather stop than guess.

Trust should not come from an About page. It should come from the product.

There will always be easier ways to sell a will, a form, or a set of legal documents.

We are trying to build something more useful: a plan that helps you understand where you stand, what you need, and what to do next.

Because eventually everyone runs out of time to straighten things out themselves.

The point of planning is to do it before then.
